NEW COURSE DATES - SURF FITNESS AND OCEAN CONFIDENCE 25th APRIL TO 2nd MAY 2020
We're delighted to announce that we're running a second week of our Surf Fitness and Ocean Confidence course this April. Dates are April 25th to May 2nd and it will be based in Portugal.
If you're keen to boost your fitness, confidence in the sea and surf level, then this is the course for you. You'll train alongside our highly qualified instructors in a variety of skills and techniques to truly unlock your potential. The week long course is delivered in a fun, supportive and engaging way. There is no 'surfer cool' here, just a friendly team who will guide you through the training which will be targeted to your own level. Our guests say that they 'feel part of a family' when they stay with us. Our course base is in a Surf Performance Centre in the stunning town of Nazare (don't worry, you won't have to surf the waves there)! Our base has all the facilities on-site and has a very welcoming atmosphere.
The cost of the week is £1150 GBP and this includes all food and accommodation. We run an airport transfer from Lisbon on the afternoon of arrival Saturday and again on departure. We ask for a 50% deposit on completion of the booking form to secure your place. Weeks tend to sell out fairly quickly, so it's good to confirm early.
This course has been developed over many years by our instructors professional big wave surfer Andrew 'Cotty' Cotton and his personal trainer Andrew 'Blakey' Blake. Together they have developed a programme to keep Cotty in peak fitness to be able to handle waves in excess of 80 feet (24 meters). Don't worry, we won't make you surf massive waves. Blakey has developed the training to be relevant and accessible by anyone of any level who practices ocean sports. We can cater for complete beginners through to expert surfers.
What to expect - you'll arrive with us on the Saturday and get settled into your accommodation and familiarise yourself with our course base accommodation and facilities. There may be time for a training session or a walk down to North Beach Nazare, just a 5 minute walk down the road. Dinner will be served early evening and will be a chance to meet the rest of the group. Our groups tend to be between 6-8 guests, but very occasionally 9. The accommodation is in spacious dorm rooms with 4 beds. However, we never put more than 2 people together sharing unless they ask to share with more friends. It is possible to book limited single rooms, but there is an extra charge for these.
First full day - On the first day we'll go over some physical screening with you to assess your limitations, investigate past injuries and discuss what you're comfortable with. There may be time for a couple of training sessions and further orientation of our base and local area. We may take a trip to the famous lighthouse on the Nazare headland to watch the waves. If there is decent surf, we'll go for a surf (find a spot up or down the coast suitable for the group). Packed lunches allow us to be mobile and use training locations around Nazare or go on a surf trip. Food is all included and consists of healthy breakfasts, great packed lunches and a hot dinner.
Typical day - The programme is set at the beginning of the week but there is of course flexibility based on weather conditions and group needs. A typical day will begin with Yoga (at various locations) followed by breakfast. Next will be a training session. This could be at base using the gym or outdoor equipment for strength and conditioning, at the pool looking at breath hold training/breathing techniques or on the beach for core and flexibility. If we're out and about we'll have our packed lunch wherever we are. Afternoon will either be further training sessions or a surf. Then back to base to freshen up before dinner. Evenings can include a 'movie night' in our lounge or trip to Nazare headland to watch the sunset.
Surfing - We are not a surf school so don't teach you to surf. However, we're all surfers so will try to surf each day where possible. We see the surfing element as a 'free session' where you can blow off some steam between intensive training. If you aren't confident surfing, we'll help you of course and can source a variety of boards if you don't bring your own (usually performance soft tops mixed with regular boards).
